Deathspell Omega, "Paracletus"

You probably know about this already, but if not, here's the news: DsO's new album Paracletus will be released by French label Season of Mist on November 9th. Available for preorder now, in CD and gatefold LP formats. What's nice is that Season of Mist is offering free shipping to the US and Canada.

DsO fans seem to have been split in recent years, with some abandoning the band as they adopted a more avant-garde or progressive approach. I personally don't get the so-called split; this is another band whose entire discography demands attention. ("I'm a DsO fan... I celebrate the band's entire catalogue.") I guess some people just don't care for intelligent metal.

In any case, pre-order it here.

Some of the hostility over the later DSO has to do with the different vocalists and their lyrical styles. Shaxul's howling, screeching vocals and typical BM lyrics (Satan, blasphemy, death etc...) as opposed to Mikko Aspa's deep, guttural voice and complex, intricate theological essays. The music itself reflects these different vocalist as well, with Shaxul era's primitive and brutal "Raw BM" sound and their current, highly technical, progressive, ''Diablos en Musica'' symphonies. It's such a revolutionary shift in approach that it almost sounds like two different bands. I love almost all of DSO's albums but their later works are undeniably more powerful and brilliant than the earlier incarnations. I guess some people think BM should never progress beyond Darkthrone worship and corpse paint. I'm obviously not one of them.

the latest DsO material has sounded like a BM version of Botch. i can't hang. i loved the track on the 'Crushing...' comp. but thought 'Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum' was boring. fwiw, i like their '04-'08 material over their much earlier output.

ok, never even got 5 minutes into their song off the split with S.V.E.S.T., but everything else they've done is great, will pre-order from somewhere domestic.

Thanks for the heads up!

boo to those who can't lose themselves in a complex maelstrom of occult incantations and f**king excellent riffing :)

@ Nate: are you fucking stupid? You couldn't get 5 minutes into a 22 min track? Fuck off, try harder.

I don't understand why most people who post anything about this band just wine about production or how they sound like Botch. It just doesn't make sense. either none of you actually listen to their records or you think any music with dissonant riffs sounds like a shitty hardcore band from the late nineties. they are nothing like botch end of discussion on that. This is probably the most progressive black metal type music i have ever heard.
