Ural Umbo, the duo formed by Reto Mäder (RM74, Sum of R) and Steven Hess (Haptic, On, Pan American, Locrian), have a new record coming out soon. They released their self-titled debut recording on Utech Records earlier this year, along with Latent Defects, an EP of material re-sourced from the original recordings.
Their new recording, Fog Tapes, is described by the label as "an even more dense, forward-thinking, nebulous post doom record. An organic and hypnotic mixture of lurking electro-acoustics, atmospheric black metal approaches, epic drones, slowly evolving melodies, doom mantras and an overall psychedelic atmosphere." Basic tracks were recorded directly to analog tapes (hence the name of the album), and enhanced with instruments (horns, kalimba, synthesizers, electronics) not typically associated with the down-tuned guitars and sluggish drums of most modern drone/doom music.
As with Ural Umbo's previous releases, this album's artwork was provided by Chicago-based photographer, Rik Garrett.
Fog Tapes will be released October 11th on Hinterzimmer Records. Samples can be found on Hinterzimmer's website.
