False 12" on Gilead Media

I was first made aware of this band by my friend Boe in Minnesota, who had mentioned the band numerous times. I hadn't heard them yet, so I could only think that another band loved by their local scene will fall by the wayside. Then, in a post on the DFFD forums, Bryan Funck from Thou praised False as his "new favorite band." Let's face it, the dude has impeccable taste, so when he loves a band, it's not to be taken lightly. My immediate thought then was that if it really was as good as the initial buzz, this would be a perfect band for Gilead Media. Well, lo and behold, months have passed, and Gilead Media is indeed releasing the debut 12" from Minneapolis' False. Further, it's actually a co-release with Bryan Funck's Howling Mine Records.

And boy are you in for a treat. The 12", pressed on 180 gram vinyl, consists of two tracks - both of which approach the 13-minute mark. 25+ minutes of fast-paced blackened metal with an undeniable nod towards raw punk edge and aggression. The dizzying array of riffs is impressive, especially for a band's first release. Some perfectly-placed keys add an additional layer of atmosphere, almost symphonic in nature. To me, the focus of this release is the energy with which the music is played. Even the initially drum-less, slowed-down, quieter section that begins at the five-minute mark of "Sleepmaker" seems a phantom for its 3 and a half minutes, ready to bust out at any given time (and it does). Forced to summarize this release with one word, "furious," "relentless," and "driven" all come to mind. This is not something you want to miss out on; it will surely not disappoint.

You can sample "The Key of Passive Suffering" in the Gilead Media Store, where you should be headed right about now to get your pre-order on. The 12" is available on its own, or with a great-looking t-shirt. Adam always does a great job with his shirts, so I spent the extra few bucks to get the t-shirt, and It is recommended that you do the same.

Ditto. Pretty underwhelmed by them conisidering the description given. Its boderline boring and hardly "relentless".

For your information, I have never received anything free from Gilead. I put my money where my mouth is and support the label and its bands. Just sayin.

I will vouch for the Kookie on this one. I have never sent free copies of anything to HSS, and don't think I haven't offered. He pre-orders every record as soon as it goes up, I don't even have a chance. I tried to refund his money once and we got in a fight.

Also to note, I'm really bummed that anyone is underwhelmed on this. I hope you'll give the b-side a chance. I am more excited about this band than I have been in about music in a long time. I feel like they're very special.
