Merkaba, Bones of the Sacred Forest

Shout out to Austin for pointing me in the direction of this one...

Highly atmospheric black metal from Lexington, Kentucky. Was described to me as sounding like "Wolves in the Throne Room playing Wheel Within Wheels covers," and that makes a lot of sense. Bones of the Sacred Forest is Merkaba's self-released debut full-length, following one demo released last year. It's a great listen, from the first track through the last - something to really immerse yourself in and experience, rather than just hear. The 5 songs on this album are raw, intense, and deeply emotive... clearly written and recorded with pure passion. Atmosphere has always played a huge role in black metal, and the atmospheres here are indicative of just why that is. Very moving indeed, this music comes from another realm.

It would seem that very few people know of this band, and that's too bad, because they need to be heard. I don't have any information except for what's here, but I'm working on getting some more, including details on how to get their album. The only thing I can recommend is leaving a message on the band's Facebook page. That's what I did, and I'm going to try to get an interview, if they're down for it. Hopefully, more info to follow...

For now, check out samples on their myspace page.
