Playlist: Sun Devoured Earth

Sun Devoured Earth is a one-man band from Aizkraukle, Latvia, that just formed in 2010. It's impossible to fit SDE into one genre, so I won't bother trying. The Sun Devoured Earth boxed set just sold out from Handmade Birds, but the SDE t-shirt is still available. To stream and download Vadim's music, you can go to the Sun Devoured Earth Bandcamp. To stay up to date, go to his blogspot.

1. Mary And Max (Adam Elliot)

One of my all time favourite movies. A touching, beautiful animated story dealing with loneliness, alienation and autism, among other things.

2. Stranger Than Paradise (Jim Jarmusch)

A great dark comedy by Jim Jarmusch. Extremely bleak at times and generally very slow-paced. But that's what makes it so damn good.

3. American Movie (Chris Smith)

An inspiring documentary about following your dreams. It's very human and is filled with great lines and colorful "characters."

4. Thirst (Chan-wook Park)

From the writer and director of Oldboy. A modern vampire movie done right.

5. Henry : Portrait of a Serial Killer (John McNaughton)

One of the bleakest, most intense movies I've ever seen. So raw and realistic it's hard to watch at times.

6. Happiness (Todd Solondz)

Yet another dark comedy. This one will make you cringe and laugh your ass off at the same time. Anyone familliar with Todd Solondz's movies will feel right at home.

7. Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (Uli Edel)

I came across this one on accident, but it will most likely stay with me forever. Probably the most powerful movie about drug addiction.

8. Ghost World (Terry Zwigoff)

A dark comedy about alienation and growing up.

1. Abandon (Sweden) - "In Reality We Suffer"

Doom metal/sludge done right. Crushing.

2. Lycia - "Cold"

Wonderful darkwave album. Not a single track that I'd dislike.

3. My Beloved - "Force Feeding Love"

Dark, eerie post-rock. Anyone looking for something different in the genre should definitely give this a shot.

4. Wreck and Reference - "Black Cassette"

A memorable and unique doom metal album. Something you truly don't see every day.

5. Former Ghosts - "Fleurs"

Very intimate and very raw synth pop. Heartbreaking.

6. Álfheimr - "Dream Sequences"

Very sweet, dreamy post-rock. Perfect for daydreaming or sleep.

7. And Also the Trees - "Farewell To The Shade"

One of my favourite goth/post-punk albums.

8. Coil - "The Ape of Naples"

My favourite album by this legendary band.
