Crooked Necks, a band of which I know very little, except that they released their debut full-length, and one of 2011's finest albums, Alright is Exactly What It Isn't, on Handmade Birds (along with an LP of Joy Division covers called Something Must Break, also on Handmade Birds). Crooked Necks cannot be defined, in terms of genre, but it is enough to say that their music is heart-breakingly sincere, and to me at least, if you like music of any sort, especially that which is generally featured on HSS, you will like Crooked Necks. A friend commented to me a short while ago that "life gets just a little bit better when listening to Crooked Necks" and I can't agree with that enough (thanks Ian).
Thanks to R. Loren for getting this for us.
A Place to Bury Strangers "S/T"
"Don't Thnk Lover"
The sound and duality of A Place to Bury Strangers' self titled album,
with the loud noisy sections shoved right up against
post-punk/shoegaze parts was a definite influence.
Katatonia "This Punishment"
Album, Tonight's Decision
A long time favorite of mine. I always thought Katatonia, old and new
material, was great at expressing isolated, depressing music.
Fly Pan Am "Brulez Suivant, Suitvante!"
Album, N'Ecoutez Pas
Taking another approach to music, Fly Pan Am is always an influence for me.
Gregor Samsa "Ain Leuh"
Another band thats great at creating an atmosphere. The entire album
has a very nice calm "hushed" quality to it.
HEALTH has to be one of my favorite bands, their approach to
everything has been spot on for me.
Byla "Closer to the Center"
Not usually a fan of ambient music but the sound and textures on this
album is outstanding.
A Silver Mt. Zion "Sow Some Lonesome Corner So Many Flowers Bloom"
Album, This is our Punk Rock...
The vocal textures, lyrics and song structures of A Silver Mt. Zion
are excellent, especially on this album.
Mogwai "Acid Food"
Album, Mr. Beast
As much as I do enjoy Mogwai, I enjoy it a little more when they have vocals.
The Knife "The Captain"
Album, Silent Shout
The dark, weird, unsettling nature of The Knife has been very
appealing from the start.
Crispin Hellion Glover "These Boots are Made for Walking"
Album, THE BIG PROBLEM =/= the Solution. The Solution = LET IT BE.
The passion and dedication Crispin Glover brings to everything he does
is very inspiring.
