Antediluvian, Through The Cervix of Hawwah

Everyone has been talking about Pitchfork's top metal albums of 2011 list; why it's good, why it sucks, blah blah blah. It does suck, of course; Pitchfork is a piece of shit and we all know it. When I first read that list, I thought it sucked for what it does include - records by Skeletonwitch and Machinehead, among other embarrassing piles of excrement - but after scanning it a bunch of times, I realize it also sucks for what it does not include - namely, Through the Cervix of Hawwah, the first full-length from Canada's Antediluvian.

To be fair, Through the Cervix of Hawwah does crack the "honorable mention" category of Pitchfork's list, but that's just not good enough. Seriously, they want to try to say that Skeletonwitch's record is better than this? Fuck off, and get a new set of ears, because you clearly can't hear.

After a number of raw demos, a split, and an EP, Antediluvian have put together an albeit short full-length album that ratchets up the hatred, animosity and disgust with a sinister, occult sensibility. The riffs are brilliant, with the deep, guttural vocals the perfect compliment. Perhaps most impressive here is the production, which could have really screwed up a great album. It does and should sound raw- but not as raw as something like Bone Awl, for example. At the same time, though, the production isn't too clean. These songs obviously shouldn't sound pretty and crisp, but they do sound fresh, if that makes any sense. And they do.

In short, it achieves everything that Leviathan's True Traitor, True Whore failed at. While that record has a few excellent moments, on the whole it sounds flat, forced, and overly premeditated; Through the Cervix of Hawwah, on the other hand, sounds exciting and timely. With this record, I know Antediluvian's hatred is being put to good use, while Leviathan's, though genuine, feels like it's serving no purpose except to make us all dumb. Perhaps I shouldn't compare, because there truly is no comparison; Through the Cervix of Hawwah succeeds in every place that True Traitor, True Whore fails.

In any case, you should decide for yourself, but I've got a hard thinking that anyone will find any degree of failure in Through the Cervix... Both that and the aforementioned Leviathan album can be had from Profound Lore.

The new Skeletonwitch album is fucking great man, if you think that this Antediwhatever shit is even worth to be mentioned in the same sentence than Forever Abomination you really have no idea about music. My granny can do better than that!
