Josh Lay & Teeth Collection LP + CDr

We're generally pretty picky about the noise releases that we review here. The noise genre is awash with garbage; anyone with a mic and the ability to just make nonsensical noise thinks they can just release a record, call it noise, and be lauded for it. Not interesting. Not even a little.

That said, though, there are artists within that genre that are doing great things to save the scene, so to speak. Two of those artists are Josh Lay, and Matthew Reis (Reis is otherwise known as Teeth Collection). They've recently released a collaborative LP + CDr of some amazingly intense noise/drone that has my jaw on the floor as I type this. The music begins on the LP (presumably) and ends on the bonus CDr, which contains collaborative material that was recorded in the same sessions (like 3 years ago) as well as some solo work from each of these noise pioneers. The noise here ebbs and flows and spins off in different directions almost constantly, but the foundation lies in some repetitive and infectious drones that will keep your ears fixed before destroying them. At one point on the CDr, I truly thought the speakers on my sound system were going to rupture, as the feedback became very intense and very loud (obviously) for a short yet glorious time.

It should be pointed out that this isn't HNW-type noise. This takes on a more droney and even psychedelic quality at times that sets it apart from HNW and from the rest of the noise genre as a whole. This is really trippy and enjoyable material, and I give it a very high recommendation. It comes in a sick-looking hand screened jacket as well. If you think you're game, it can be had, for a price, from Lay's Husk Records or Reis's Factotum Tapes.

Cloak of Altering, The Night Comes Illuminated with Death - Review

I posted the announcement of this release just a while back, but now that I've had the chance to give it a good listen, I'm reviewing it.

As I said before, this is the project of Mories (from Gnaw Their Tongues and De Magia Veterum, among others), who has chosen to resurrect the work he did as Ophiuchus in the late 90s. It is described as experimental, symphonic black metal, tinged with some electronic industrial sounds. That is certainly an apt descriptor, in this case, as it tells you exactly what you're going to hear. While fusing these fairly distinctive sounds, the album is still relatively straight-forward.

Black metal is the foundation of the music, and a great foundation it is; the riffs are frenetic and played with a high level of ferocity, and some are quite memorable. For example, the simple yet infectious riff that pokes its head out about halfway through the second track, "Cloak of Altering" is grand, as is the opening riff to "The Lustful Farçade of the Madrigals" and in conjunction with the guitar leads (which, throughout the album, are very, very good), they provide the album a majesty it might otherwise lack.

Mories is well known for incorporating a good deal of noise into his works, and that certainly doesn't lack here, but it sometimes feels likes the noise is either unintended or beside the point. At times, there is just too much going on; while the industrial samples do give an experimental edge to the album, they sometimes overwhelm the rest of the music and feel a bit out of place. Most of the time, though, they're very fitting and well-placed, and on the final track, "Golden Radiation Fills the Void" the industrial experimentation pays off in a big way, closing the album in very impressive fashion.

All in all, this is a very solid, enjoyable album, and while it's not groundbreaking, I certainly look forward to Mories doing more with this project, as it some of the more impressive non-GTT stuff I've heard him record. It's not out yet, but you can preorder it now from Human Jigsaw.

Vestiges Tour Info

Vestiges are a great band. Their album The Descent of Man was an instant heavy classic, fusing elements of hardcore, post-rock, black metal, crust, and screamo, much in the vein of Fall of Efrafa. Besides the fact the album is out now, available as a tape, CD, or double LP, they are hitting the road with Lake of Blood and Full of Hell for their first full US tour. Fuck yes, I will definitely be checking these guys out in Holyoke.

Via the band:

Vestiges will be leaving to hit the road across the USA and Canada in just a few days, playing select dates with their friends in Lake of Blood, Full of Hell, and Lapse.

You may stream or download their new song, VI, here, or download their debut full-length, The Descent of Man, here.

Sun Devoured Earth

We all connect with music in very different ways. Sometimes, it's an intellectual thing, or a political thing, or perhaps we go bare-bones, get naked and connect with it on a very elemental level. The latter is generally the case for me, though I've been listening to music for so long that I've found music that I can connect to in such absurd ways that it just doesn't even make sense. For example, I don't know what part of me Peste Noire speaks to, but it says something to some part of me, no matter how ridiculous that sounds.

Sometimes it's just purely emotional. That is the case with one-man Latvian band Sun Devoured Earth. The music, which can not be easily classified, has elements of post-rock, shoegaze, black metal, post-punk, ambient, drone, and dreamy pop music, and that amalgamation brings stunning results. The music is often gloomy and depressing, and sometimes it helps me see that ray of hope even if it's not really there, but what is constant is that this music is always beautiful in a very profound and poignant way.

It's extreme music in the sense that the lows are very low, and the highs can be very high. At times, I feel like it could push me over the edge; at others, it feels as if it illuminates the fire in our hearts that gives us hope and pushes us forward. Regardless, this is greatness at work.

Prolificacy is the name of the game, here. Go to the Sun Devoured Earth BandCamp to check out the music and learn more. Though free downloads are available, I'd encourage you to support the artist if you can. You should also be interested in knowing that R. Loren at Handmade Birds will soon be releasing a 4xCDr boxed set of Sun Devoured Earth's 2011 releases, plus new material. Surely a must-have.

//Quote//

"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the
bones of a dying world." - Terence McKenna

Amebix - Knights of the Black Sun 12 " single

I wasn't going to post this, just because I figured everyone knew about it (and also because I questioned why a 12" with just one 5 minute song was necessary) but after hearing the song, I can't NOT post it. The song is epic and beautiful, while still powerful, edgy, and intense. Definitely a departure from the crust the legendary band is known for, but is no doubt as good as anything they've done. Profane Existence still has the 12" maxi-single, which features just this song, but pressed at 45 RPM (with a decorative etching on the b-side) available for preorder, but this should be shipping any day now if it hasn't started already.

And to think... this is just a taste of what the full-length, due in the fall, will sound like. Catch the video here.

Lesser of Two

Embers is an HSS favorite, and have put out one of the best albums this year, in Shadows. But before there was Embers, there was Lesser of Two, a fiercely independent anarcho-punk/crust band. Their lyrics were intensely political, and they lived the lifestyle they preached about. Their entire discography (which was all self-released), as well as some unreleased recordings, are now available online for streaming or as a pay-what-you-want downloads from their Bandcamp page. Yeah, you can download for free, but it would be cool to show the band some love and support. They may not exist as a band anymore, but the people still do, and I'm sure they'd appreciate any support.  This is really good stuff - if it's worthy of HSS, than you know it's worthy of your hard-earned $$$.

Gates, The Prevailing Wind update, print offer

Just a quick update on the Gates cassette we posted on last month... Ordering information is now available from the gates Bandcamp page, where you can also stream The Prevailing Wind, if you have not already. The cassette is limited to 50, and it is amazing, so you'd better hustle to ensure that you get one. Highest HSS recommendation for this.

Also, still available are some of the stellar prints designed by Kevin Gan Yuen for the Gates show with Merzbow. Go here to get info on getting one. Just $10. Dig it.

Cloak of Altering, The Night Comes Illuminated With Death

HSS friend Mories (Gnaw Their Tongues, Aderlating, De Magia Veterum) is back at it again; it honestly seems like this guy never rests, and considering the quality of the material he releases, why should he? This new project, Cloak of Altering, is a continuation of the Ophiuchus project he did in the late 1990s. Mories characterizes it as early 90s symphonic black metal with avant-garde tendencies, industrial electronics, and (as always) diverse experimentation. Two tracks can be previewed on Soundcloud, here and here. Those tracks make this project sound amazing, as you will see. Cloak of Altering has a myspace page, a Facebook page, and can be checked out on Mories' Devotional Hymns Page. To preorder the album, which will be released by Human Jigsaw on June 27th, go here. There is some other great looking stuff there (Dark Ages/From the Bogs of Aughiska split picture disc, anyone?), so check it out.
