Review - Forest of the Soul, Restless in Flight

We don't just review metal records here; we're open to all sorts of music. This record is a case in point. There is no metal here; not even a little.

Which is not really a surprise. Forest of the Soul features Andrew Della Cagna and Aaron Carey of fellow Bindrune band Nechochwen, which, you may or may not remember, released the album Azimuths to the Otherworld in 2010. That album, incidentally one of my favorite records of 2010, had quite a bit of metal on it, but that's not where Nechochwen's roots lie. Listen to the first Nechochwen album, Algonkian Mythos, and you will hear plain as day where those roots lie - in classical guitar playing, folk music, and above all, Appalachia.

Restless in Flight, Forest of the Soul's second full-length album, and their first for Bindrune, is a slice of Appalachia. It is, of course, characterized by some of the same things that make Nechochwen so mesmerizingly good, but this is by no means a Nechochwen album. Carey's incredible guitar work has to be the focal point of the music, as it is in Nechochwen, but these songs generally lack the often somber and solemn overtones of Nechochwen ("Alone/Desert Rose" and "My Betrothed" are notable exceptions). Indeed, this album is an Appalachian celebration, and from beginning to end, it flows like the white waters do through the glorious mountains of Appalachia. Having grown up in southern New York State, and having spent a good part of my youth in the Appalachians visiting family, I can certainly appreciate what has inspired these songs. While classical guitar is front and center, it touches on rock, folk, country, the blues, and a variety of other styles, but never loses that good ole' Appalachian spirit. The songs are catchy and often quite infectious - the album-opening "Restless in Flight," "Without You," and "Green Heroes" (a paean to Irish folk music) are all prime examples. Taken for what it is, it is a very good album.

This is where my problem lies, though - and I fully accept that it is entirely MY problem, so as to dissuade you from having the same issue.  When I first heard this record, I admit I was quite disappointed. I expected to hear something closer to Nechochwen, and when I didn't, I reacted poorly. Over time, though, I have learned that those expectations were totally unfair, and when I finally listened to the record with an open mind, I was delighted by what I heard. It's not nearly as intense as Azimuths to the Otherworld, and that turned me off at first, but I came to realize that it doesn't have to be. (If I hold every record I hear to that standard, I'll be disappointed quite a bit.) Because while it may not have the same intensity as Azimuths, it is clearly played with nothing but heart, and that can only be a good thing. It is without question an honest expression of various aspects of life in Appalachia, and a beautiful one at that. Listen to this for what it is - a Forest of the Soul album - and you'll likely be as enchanted as I am. Now is the time - this is a great midsummer record.

Also, keep in mind that this album is put out by Bindrune Recordings - a label with a proven track record of putting out absolutely nothing but fine music. Restless in Flight is available now as a lovely 6-panel digipack CD, for only $11 shipped in the US, or $13 shipped elsewhere in the world. Order it now (and for goodness sake, get the Nechochwen album if you haven't already), and keep your eyes on this label, for they have two releases coming up for preorder soon that will knock your socks off...

Necros Christos, Doom of the Occult 2xLP

The band's first release in four years, and it is every bit as good as we could have expected. Dark, evil, and menacing, yet intricate and superbly intelligent. The 23 compositions on this album, amassing 73+ minutes of music, are very good, and this is no doubt a step up from 2007's Triune Impurity Rites. To be honest, the album is quite spellbinding, taking influence from not only death and black metal, but from doom and classic heavy metal as well. The musicianship is exquisite, and brings the deadly, sinister character of the music into focus more clearly than any of their previous work. The CD has been available since March, but the long-awaited double vinyl edition is finally available from none other than the Ajna Offensive. Starts shipping on July 8th.

Kiss – The Originals
Found this classic vinyl release last week at the local Brooklyn Flea Market. Basically “The Originals” is the first three Kiss albums released in one package. Early Kiss represents my youth and it never grows stale to revisit these songs. “S/T”, “Hotter Than Hell” and “Dressed to Kill” are essential rock n roll records. More and more these days I find myself going back to records that I loved when I was a young kid.

Oranssi Pazuzu – Myƶhempien Aikojen
Some people know that I have had a past in Black Metal but truth be told in 2011 I don’t really listen to much BM anymore. It’s a stale genre and little interests me. But this band! Fucking amazing! A friend of mine tipped me off and I ordered the 2xLP because I loved what I heard of the samples. Weird psychedelic Black Metal from Finland. Some bands have claimed this title in the past, but to me, this band is the first that has done it properly and so creatively. It sounds like 90’s BM prototype ingesting way too many Magic Mushrooms while holding hands with Mary Jane going down some sort of expressive artistic dreamlike path. Ha Ha

Eyehategod – “In the Name of Suffering”, “Takes As Needed For Pain” and “Dopesick” re-released on 2xLP on Emetic Records.
Often imitated but never equaled and one of my favorites bands ever: EHG! No question. These first three albums are quintessential sludge-doom-core-whatever-the-fuck-you-want-to-call-it. EHG has this amazing ability to mix torture, good songwriting and the blues all in one great mess. Joey is one of the most underrated drummers in the genre if you ask me. The sweet sound of Jimmy and Brian’s feedback/riffs literally makes me smile. Mike's vomit poetry still holds venomous and ever potent. Oh and they play to 11 and seem to finally have a steady bassist with Gary. Ive seen people question when they will put out a new record and not just re-releases, but I think these guys are probably JUST NOW seeing some $ for all the years they’ve been doing it. I don’t think their previous label treated them kindly. They deserve everything they get! They will be seen as pioneers in the future for this kind of heavy music. Mark my words.

Kiss It Goodbye – She Loves Me…She Loves Me Not
Deadguy – Fixation on a Coworker
This is a groundbreaking record that I haven’t listened to in quite some time. Not only does it hold up after all this time, but is intensity blew me away all over again. Tim Singer and Keith Huckins are two great contributors to the 90's underground scene. I would put this band in the same category as Deadguy and if you don’t know about them you should check out the “Fixation on a Coworker” album if you dig heavy chaotic shit.

Rudimentary Peni – No More Pain
No frills dark gruff punk that I can put on repeat several times in a row. The down-picking bare bones approach is very infectious for me. Not sure if people think of this album when they think of Peni, but I think its killer and has an almost trance like quality to it.

Judge – Bringin it Down/ New York Crew
Judge perfected the Metallic[a] xNYHCx sound. This album is a total banger. Definitely some of the best written and well performed hardcore SONGS from their era. Judge was actually a very musical band that leaned more towards metal in their sound and hardcore in the words and attitude. The New York crew 7” was way more raw and had the amazing song “Fed Up!” on it. Perhaps one of the most pissed song ever! “Fed the Fuck UP!”

Haha To quote someone on youtube:
“Now every time I crack open a beer or smoke a bowl, I'm gonna think about Mike Judge conin' after me with the construction gloves! User: justdoitasshole

AC/DC – Let There Be Rock
This is another score from going through vinyl bins at the Flea market. I will simply say this Rock N Roll at its best.

Warpaint – Undertow
I love these girls. This album blew me away with its creativity, individualism and overall mature approach. When I saw them live I was hooked. I was originally unsure as they are very hyped band at the moment, but its fully deserved and their “The Fool” 2xLP has had many spins on the turntable this year. I really hope to be able to smoke some weed with these ladies one day! It’s a goal. haha

The Mars Volta – Frances the Mute
This band is very controversial, yes I know some people hate them. And I can honestly understand why, but for me they are a fantastic modern progressive band. This album is their masterpiece. The song Cassandra Gemini” is my favorite song of theirs. Its amazing that they can have an almost half an hour long song that keeps my interest and gets repeated listens over the years. This is a go to track taking a trip on the subway.

Asva, Presences of Absences Review

Much has changed for Asva since the release of their last record, What You Don't Know is Frontier, in 2008. First and foremost amongst those changes is the new lineup. Asva is still centered around G. Stuart Dahlquist, but the rest of the band sees this as the first Asva record they've worked on. The new lineup finds Dahlquist on guitars, bass, and various organs, Jake Weller on trumpet and flugelhorn, Greg Gilmore (who played in Love Battery(!), my favorite of the "grunge" bands from the nineties) on drums, and Toby Driver (of Kayo Dot, Maudlin of the Well, Tartar Lamb) on guitars and vocals. You can probably tell from the lineup and instruments involved that this will not just be the "next Asva record."

Indeed, Toby Driver's influence is all over this record, as it has achieved a level of sublime eloquence uncommon in metal today. It should be stated that this is still a metal record in some ways, and the underlying drone element that has typified previous Asva records is as present as ever, but when you hear this record I think you'll agree that we're hearing something very new and very fresh here. It's a somewhat raw and simple album, and in Dahlquist's words, "almost punk-rock in basic ideology." But in this simplicity lies the beauty and genius at play on the record.. There is no excess, no ego, no pomp and circumstance, nothing to slap you in the face to make you take notice.

The songwriting and instrumentation is simple, but still very much grand. Perhaps it is Dahlquist's use of organs in orchestrating the slow and elegant melodies that make this such a unique experience, or maybe it's Toby Driver's varied and enchanting vocals, the twisting imagery at work when the flugelhorn and trumpet come to play, or the fine rhythmic pulse of the drums. Whatever it is, it all congeals to produce a deeply (though not densely) textured work that is characterized as much by its use of space as it is by anything else. That space can be haunting and even processional at times, but it only serves to make this album that much more significant in what it's achieved.

It's easy to hear the intimate connections that the artists themselves have made with this music, and you are thus invited to connect with it as well. Once this album has entered your consciousness, it will be impossible to remove it. To let it in, go to Important Records and order the CD, available now. Soon to be available on 2xLP as well.

Thanks to Stuart Dahlquist for his words, which were helpful in writing this review.
