Haute Magie Contest

Haute Magie is a young label that we have been very happy to work with and support. It only seems fitting that we now announce this contest that has been in the planing stages for a while. I wish I could say that those plans bore plentiful fruit, but this contest is not really any different than any other we've featured, except that there are three packages of prizes that will be given out. I guess I was just waiting until the time is right, and with the celestial bodies being aligned as they are right now, the time is perfect.

Perhaps the time is right because the pre-order for the long-awaited split between Bunrage (featuring Garry Brents of Cara Neir) and Footpaths (featuring our friend Jon from The Inarguable) is now live on the Haute Magie website. I hesitate to tell you much about it - just check it out yourself. It's a beautiful thing, and might just keep you guessing - especially if you're expecting anything like the previously mentioned projects that these guys are involved in.

In any case, this contest will feature three prize sets:

One third-place winner will receive a copy of the Jen Paul/No Lakes CS and one copy of the split cassette from David Carter and The Witch Family

One second-place winner will receive one copy of Mike Bruno's The Sad Sisters LP.

One first-place winner will receive all three.

Really nice packages, all around. You want these items, believe me. To enter this contest, use the comment box below to explain a little bit about your feelings about magick. Perhaps it is very close to you; perhaps it is something you fear; perhaps it is something you view from afar, or perhaps you don't even believe in magick at all. Tell us what it means to you, and why it means what it does.

The contest will run from Thursday, March 22nd, through the late evening of April 15th, at which time the three winners will be chosen at random.

Let the witch-hunt begin.

Magick is what makes the sidewalks fill with broken glass. It makes drunken sluts forget that St. Patty's day is over, get drunk and get with guys wearing shirts stating "I <3 Drunken Sluts". Its also what happens, in a much different way, when people speak truth.

Magick is pulling white rabbits out of your head, chasing them through symbolic neighborhoods, and evolving in the process. It's not about kowtowing to boundaries - it's about changing your mind, understanding nuance and then choosing your fate!

I think people were made believe that magick is something dangerous to keep them obedient. In my opinion magick is in all of us, and everyone can learn to use it. Maybe at some point in time it was as normal as taking a dump... but somehow we lost the connection to these abilities and the few remaining magicians used it to exert power over others (see voodoo etc.).

Magick is the loneliness a ruffled-up teenager feels in their bedroom during the summer, illuminated by a single fluorescent bulb and a clouded, waxing moon. Dusty cardboard cover records and half-burned sage to drum up some sort of feeling, whatever it could be. It's the what-ifs and who-cares on the blank whitewash ceiling with a hot draft coming through the 1890s windows. It's the summer and it's the bugs that become your only friends.

Magick stems from the findings of a strong and healthy awareness of nature and the spirits and deities who exist in nature, seen or unseen. Magick must understand the language that Nature uses to speak its wisdom. All else flows from that. Magick has a votive characteristic. The act of beseeching a deity, spirit, creature, entity or mystical being to aid in the accomplishment of a service in return for an offering often results in Magick.

Magick is the peripheral blur beyond understanding, the refraction of hidden delights and the contorted silhouettes of ancient horrors, dancing bedside. Twisted woman who feast on insects and cultivate children's souls. Bearded magi who give the gifts of kings and the great beast who casts the shroud of evil that infects mens hearts with ugliness. An elixir of words, the summoning potion of magick.

the word "magick," like religeon, is for twerps, however, there is no denying that the world can be a strange place sometimes, given that science is still such a young "thing."

magick is the dominance nature still has over humans
magick is being in the woods with your most loved in the several minutes of barely visible light before the darkness has totally set in and the you are lost.

"Magick" is a modern bastardization of the word "magic," attempting to elicit a dark/occult sort of connotation.

"Magick" is a modern play on the words "magic" and "dick" in a deliberate crass exoteric joke and a not so crass (literal) esoteric "joke's on you" hidden in plain sight secret.

Magick is what makes babies laugh all the time. Its powers are difficult to mantain without certain spiritual training. But you can be sure that its powers are counteracting all the fucked up feelings from the very beginning of this existence. It's told that way. And forever will be that way.

MAGICK IS KVLT

Magick is something that informs the things I make. The artwork and music. And something that I read way too much about. And probably annoy people with by talking about.

Magick/magic/magik/etc is something I've always been pretty skeptical of, but also fascinated by. I've found that it's not really important whether or not it's 'real' because it's really a way of manipulating your mind. You can't necessarily move things with your mind or start fires and shit, but even a simple ritual, as a symbolic gesture, can be effective in creating a 'magikal' effect. Say, to inspire yourself or others. Like religion is pretty much bull shit, but people do ridiculous things in the name of gods, KNOWWHATI'MSAYIN?

Magick is the moment. The moment the world slows down and you are aware of everything around you. The hiss of an amplifier, the smell of an old book, the touch of another, the whisper of the wind in the trees. All become one, and your place is this order is clear. This allows us to truly appreciate and understand art, music and life, and to know what brings worth to our lives. That moment of magick.

There are many practitioners of magick. Teachers, friends, performers, speakers - anyone who rips away the fabric of modern life and allows us to see, and understand, the strings beneath the facade, does so with the goal of helping us experience this magick on our own. They have had their awakening, and now we must have ours.

There is no doctrine to magick. There is no guide, no map, no dogma, no rule. There is only magick, that moment of realization, that we all strive toward, in the arts or in life, where everything fits perfectly. That is magick.

When the hair stands up on the back of your neck.
When your mind is consumed with images and evocations which words cannot articulate.
When you find tears of joy upon your cheeks, stood in the middle of the grey drudgery of the workplace.
When you can do nothing but scream for the sheer wonder of it...
